Race4Innocence

ICMEC Board Member Mike DeNoma is an extraordinary man. In addition to being Group Executive Director of Consumer Banking for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore, a founding member of ICMEC's Financial Coalition Against Child Pornography, Mike is the father of six and an avid athlete. His love for his children combined with his athletic prowess provided the motivation for his “Race4Innocence,” a multi-year quest to raise $1 million to help ICMEC eradicate the commercial viability of child pornography.

From October 2005 to October 2006, Mike put his limits to the test by completing a grand total of 1,228 kilometers (763 miles) in three grueling, physical challenges: the Greatest Race on Earth, Marathon Des Sables, and the Furnace508.

The Greatest Race on Earth started with the Highest Race in the dizzying altitudes of Nairobi, Kenya on 23 October 2005, followed by the Island Race on 4 December 2005 in Singapore, the Historic Race in Mumbai, India on 15 January 2006, and the Harbor Race in downtown Hong Kong on 12 February 2006. It is the only marathon series in the world.

For the Marathon des Sables, Mike endured a grueling six-day foot race in the Sahara Desert and braved 230 kilometers (140 miles) of sand dunes and rocky terrain. Forced to carry his own backpack containing food, sleeping gear, and other necessary materials, he battled excruciating heat, blinding sandstorms, blisters, and dehydration to successfully finish 242nd out of 731 starting participants.

From one desert to another, in October 2006 Mike competed in the Furnace 508, a 508-mile bike race through Death Valley, the hottest place in the world. Billed “The Toughest 48 Hours in Sport,” Mike rode day and night across the Mojave Desert, braving harsh desert winds, brutal extremes in temperature and terrain, and 35,000 feet of cumulative climbing on a high desert route. Mike crossed the finish line in exactly 47 hours, 55 minutes, and 57 seconds, just over 4 minutes ahead of the official cut off.

The fight continues in 2007 – Mike has pledged to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar this summer, but only after he participates in the Mohican Trail 100, a grueling 100-mile run in Loudonville (Ohio). Beginning at 5:00 am 16 June 2007, Mike will have 30 hours to complete this race, climbing and descending over 11,000 feet on a mostly forest-covered trail.

Mike is not in this alone. His colleague Tan Ying Hsien, Group Head of Legal and Compliance Consumer Banking at Standard Chartered Bank, completed six marathons in six months. He joined Mike in the Greatest Race on Earth and ran the Standard Chartered Ironman Korea followed by The Sydney Marathon.
